Charter Homes builder draws scrutiny for odd sales claims, multiple liens

August 25, 2008

Charter Homes owner Jerry Jaquess fancies himself a white knight for King Park, a neighborhood once known mainly for its
rampant crime, boarded-up homes and vacant lots. But as he’s constructed a slew of homes and carriage houses there, the local
builder has stirred up several lawsuits, dozens of liens and persistent questions about whether his business is legit.

IndyGo Colts shuttle a no-go

Planners to pare down commuter-rail options: Vote for light diesel trains would precede design

September 22, 2008

Goodbye elevated guideway. Goodbye buses zooming down paved-over rail beds. For that matter, forget about commuter trains running down the median of Binford Boulevard and I-69. Or along Allisonville Road or Keystone Avenue. These northeast corridor rapid-transit options, cheered and jeered by residents in the debate over rapid transit, officially get thrown from the train on Sept. 26. That’s if a regional government group votes to accept the recommendation of the Indianapolis Metropolitan Planning Organization for running diesel light rail…

HAMILTON COUNTY Carmel adopts budget of $89 million for services The city of Carmel has passed an $89 million budget for 2009. VIEWPOINT: Put progress over politics and enact reform

October 20, 2008

As we approach the final stretch in this year’s election season, it’s easy to get desensitized to the political rhetoric. Sometimes, though, there’s an issue that transcends the partisan divide and deserves to cut through the clutter: Local government reform is such an issue. Indiana’s Constitution created a multilayered system of county, township and municipal government in 1851. This might have been appropriate when most travel was by horseback, but today it’s left Hoosiers to support more than 3,000 units…

Assessor consolidation is a must

November 3, 2008

We have a long-standing policy of not endorsing political candidates, but there’s no such policy where ballot initiatives
are concerned. So we urge our readers to vote "yes" on assessor consolidation.

Assessor referendum sweeps Marion townships

November 5, 2008

Voters in eight Marion County townships overwhelmingly opted to consolidate duties of their local assessors and transfer the duties to the county assessor. Warren Township had the lowest affirmative count, 57 percent, while Washington had the highest, 70 percent. Results of the referendum question, “Should the assessing duties of the elected township assessor in the […]

Election of president, governor signals Hoosiers desire changes

November 10, 2008

Indiana’s blue vote for president-elect Barack Obama on Election Day was a sign that Hoosiers are ready for change. So was
the state’s red vote to keep incumbent Gov. Mitch Daniels in office. In this case, the status quo means more change. Daniels
has been making gutsy and sometimes unpopular moves since taking office four years ago. He ran on a promise to keep shaking
things up.

Brainard defends Keystone project

line connecting downtown Indianapolis to Hamilton County, and it couldn’t have come at a better time.

Town of Fishers considers new form of government

January 19, 2009

Sitting in gridlocked traffic along Interstate 69, Fishers residents might already think of their town as
a city. This sprawling suburb of 65,000 people certainly looks nothing like the burg of less than 1,000 it was three decades ago.
But down at the municipal government complex, Fishers is still a town, just as it was incorporated in 1891.

Housing market may have hit bottom-WEB ONLY

January 24, 2009

Here’s something that passes as good news for central Indiana’s moribund housing market: Prices might hold steady this year, after falling nearly 7 percent from their 2006 peak.
