I have grown tired of the half-truths sold to the public regarding how much of every taxpayer dollar goes into classrooms [Chu column, March 5 Forefront]. This column implies that of every dollar, $0.41 does not go toward student education. This misinformation has been bandied about ad nauseam. This $0.41 is comprised of many costly services in support of children who attend public schools: food services (includes food costs, equipment and cafeteria personnel); transportation (includes buses, drivers and fuel); building maintenance (including utilities, replacement parts/services and maintenance personnel). Nowhere have the overhead costs of operating schools been acknowledged. It would better serve taxpayers if the whole truth were told.
