Just about a week before the grand opening of the third and final theater in the Center for the Performing Arts, Steven Libman has resigned as President and CEO.
Yes, I'm asking the same question. What happened?
The vague official statement speaks to "personal reasons" and "other opportunities." I'm sure more info will come out shortly. Libman's stints have been short elsewhere–he spent only about three years at La Jolla Playhouse–so this doesn't come as a big shock. Still, the timing is odd. In the world of arts management, this seemed like a pretty sweet gig.
I'm sure more will come out in the days to come.
In the meantime, the Tarkington Theatre will host a kids event on Saturday and an open house on Sunday–which has a planned ribbon cutting with Libman.
Who's in charge now? Frank Basile has been appointed interim President/CEO beginning today. Basile, who also writes for IBJ, is a noted arts philanthropist and community leader. Board chairman Rollin M. Dick says a national search for a full-time replacement immediately.
