Virginia Kay's Doughnuts plans to open a retail shop in the former home of Bonjour Cafe & Bakery at Meridian and 24th streets. The homegrown bakery owned by Mike Ferrell expects to open the shop by early September. The 1,969-square-foot building at 2402 N. Meridian St., in front of the Library Services Center, has been vacant since Bonjour closed in the summer of 2009, less than a year after it opened. Virginia Kay's eventually hopes to add a drive-through if the city approves a variance request. Dunkin Donuts and Baskin-Robbins had planned to take the space and won a variance approval for a drive-through but later pulled the plug on the plans. The variance approval cannot be transferred to Virginia Kay's.
